Understanding Watts and Range
The range of most UHF radios is about 1 mile per watt for the 1st watt. Doubling the watts does not mean double the distance. Some radio sellers may claim this just to boost sales but it is not true. UHF racecar radios range is effected by hills, woods, buildings, haulers in the infield at oval tracks and some other structures.
# 1 - A 1 Watt radio may talk 30 miles if you are on a boat in the ocean and may work fine if you are up on the spotters stand at Talladega looking down at your car [line of sight] but may not talk to your car if you are on pit road trying to talk to your driver on the back stretch. Hauler buildings etc just blocked your line of site.
# 2 – A 4 to 5 Watt radio will handle about any race track up to 6 miles [ still depending on structures etc]. To increase reception a properly mounted roof mount antenna is required. Our Road Race and Speedway kits come with very detailed instructions on how to mount your antenna.
#3 -Helpful tips on Buying a Race Car Radio set.
Over the years radios have gotten smaller, cheaper and in some cases better. The best are still the HYT, RYT and most high end Motorola Radios [not the Walmart Walkie talkies]. Baofeng has been in the market for years and while they are low cost, low watt, no warranty and with batteries that don’t last long they do work ok in some cases like small short tracks with line of site. We do sell those in the GT Series with great success and very good customer satisfaction but if you are racing anything more than a 25 lap street stock on Saturday night invest into one of our Premium HYT or RYT Speedway or Road Race kits
